Markups are an important aspect of balancing the budget of a bid. The SharpeSoft Estimator allows for a high degree of flexibility in where these markups are applied inside the Summary Sheet. However, there are occasions when a job may be primarily composed of subcontractor items, which will require a different strategy when creating markups.
How to:
Open the Indirects table from the Job menu on the toolbar.
Create an indirect item(s) that reflect the costs you need to be marked up. This is specifically not a subcontractor item, but something belonging to you.

Next, copy the indirect item(s) with Ctrl+C on the keyboard or by right-clicking on the item.

Open the Prorates window from the Job menu on the toolbar.
Paste the copied indirect item(s) into the Prorates window.
Return to the Indirects window. Right-click on the item(s) just copied, then select Toggle What-If Status from the option menu. This will temporarily remove the indirect items from being calculated by the Summary sheet.

Return to the Prorates window once again. From the Job menu, select Spread Prorates.
In the Spread Prorates window, press the Insert button on the bottom left. You will select all of the bid items that are to have the markup applied to. Press the Spread button once finished.
Now open the Summary sheet. Your subcontractor items will have been turned into "proper" bid items that can have markups applied to them as normal.

You can create accurate reports from this position by first going to the Rounding Sheet and selecting Auto-Round to drive all of our most recent changes through the bid.
Open the Reports Tree and select the Bid-Item Costs and Bid/Rounded Prices Report. This will display the costs of the subcontractor items as well as the adjusted bid price, factoring in the inserted markups.
