Rounding Rules in the SharpeSoft Estimator

2 min read

This Rounding Rules window is used to set up specific rounding rules for the system to use when rounding your job bid. This includes changing the decimal point the system will use when rounding the bid, such as to the nearest cent, the nearest whole dollar, etc. If you have bid items with large quantities (say 200,000 to a million or more), then rounding a unit price to the nearest dollar could amount to a great deal of money. In that case you would probably set up a rounding rule to deal with large quantities.

How to:

  • Open the Defaults menu from the main menu bar.

  • From the dropdown menu, select Company Configuration.

  • A context menu will open. Select Rounding Rules.

Enter your default rounding rule by clicking on the number you want to use for rounding purposes. If you want to round to the nearest thousandth, click on ".001", if you want to round to the nearest penny, click on ".01", if you want to round to the nearest dime, click on "0.1" and so on. The system will use this default whenever the custom rounding rules you set up in the next section of the window DO NOT apply to your job bid.

Conditional Rules

The Rounding Rules window also offers the ability to set up Conditional Rules. These can be accessed by clicking Insert inside the Rounding Rules window.

Conditional Rules are rounding thresholds the system will implement based on the values entered for the parameters.

  • When creating a rounding rule, users will choose when the rule should be applied to the bid, based on Quantity, Unit Price, or Total Price.

  • Next, decide what range values constitute the rule's threshold.

  • Finally, decide the specific rounding point. There are nine options, from No Round to rounding to 10000, etc. Be sure to choose whatever rounding point best works for you.

The example below illustrates a Conditional Rule implemented on large unit quantities, activating at 500,000 and no longer applying beyond 10,000,000, and rounded to the nearest 0.01.

When rounding a bid using custom rules, the system will apply your rules in the order they are listed in this window. When it finds one that fits, that is the one it will use and that is the only rule it will use. Make sure you list all rules you enter here in the order of their priority.

If none of the rules you have listed in the Conditional Rules panel apply to a particular job bid, the system will apply the Default Rule you previously selected.
